The Oakland Active Orchestra (OAO) is a collective of Bay Area musicians that allows for the cultivation, exploration and propagation of new music in the local community. Following a rich tradition of large ensembles that have existed over the past 30 years in the Bay Area creative music scene, the Oakland Active Orchestra was formed in the summer of 2009 and explores various innovative and traditional techniques in composition and free improvisation. OAO will achieve its objectives through regular rehearsals (where musical ideas/compositions are introduced and developed), monthly performances (where the music is shared with the community), and interactive seminars (where the concepts and approaches to the music are discussed with students/fans). In addition, the OAO will augment these practices by hosting leading musicians from the larger landscape of international creative music activity in order to enrich the skills of the musicians and attract new audience members.
Oakland Active Orchestra currently includes Aaron Bennett, reeds; Phillip Greenlief, reeds; Aram Shelton, reeds; Cory Wright, reeds; Darren Johnston, trumpet; Theo Padouvas, trumpet; Andy Strain, trombone; Dina Maccabee, viola; Hillary Overberg, violin; Kristian Aspelin, guitar; Noah Phillips, guitar; Lisa Mezzacappa, bass; Kim Cass, bass; Mark Clifford, vibraphone; Sam Ospovat, drums.
